Do You Have A Smart Favicon?

Updated: Jun 6, 2023

what is a favicon

If you own a business, a brand, and a website, then it is imperative that you get a smart favicon for your website? Why so? We are going to get into the details, right away?

What is a favicon?

A favicon is the tiny icon you see at the top left corner of each window that you have open on your browser. For Facebook, it is the tiny blue and white symbol that helps you make out the Facebook window that is open among the zillions of tab on your browser. For Youtube, it is the red button with the white play sign on it.

Typically, an average favicon helps you differentiate between pages that are open. So, what is a smart favicon?

A smart favicon is one which not only helps your user differentiate between your webpage and that of others, it is one which draws the attention of your user, singularly, towards it.

Your favicon should be so closely relatable to your brand that the user does not have to go hunting for your page by clicking each open tab. Suppose, you have a garden landscaping business, so typically your favicon should be something like a tree or a leaf, which is clearly visible in that small tab space.

If you have a brand logo which has your initials, it is also a good idea to have those initials up there. It is best to have it in a color that goes against any background, the typical grey of Chrome, Mozilla, Mac OS, or Edge.

Your favicon should be browser design friendly, too. If the user is using browser extensions that let them change the color scheme of their browser, as in the background and tab colors, then your favicon should not get lost in these color details.

Black stands out on almost all color backgrounds and so do colors like yellow, white, and blue (teal and turquoise).

Another fun fact about favicons, if a user decides to bookmark your page (which is an achievement in itself) then it is your favicon that shows in the link bar or the bookmarking area.
